GOED Approves Tesla Abatement
The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) approved a $330,250,366 tax abatement for Tesla. The company’s first abatement was approved in 2014 and, as a result, Tesla will begin paying an annual minimum of $53 million in real and personal property taxes and modified business taxes beginning July of next year. Since that abatement was approved, Tesla has invested $6.2 billion in Nevada, built a 5.4 million square foot “Gigafactory” and provided 17,000 local construction jobs and over 11,000 highly paid permanent jobs. With the new abatement, Tesla has pledged to make a $3.6 billion capital investment at its current site and create another 3,000 jobs at an average hourly wage of $33.49.
North Las Vegas Launches CORE Program
The City of North Las Vegas’ fire department has launched the Collaborative Outreach Referral and Evaluation (CORE) program to assist callers who need community resources rather than emergency response. Through the program, CORE coordinates work directly with those in need to provide resources and referrals to address issues from substance abuse and medical services to transportation and family support.
Home Prices Level
Nevada home prices appear to be leveling off. In southern Nevada, more homes are available for sale and fewer are changing hands than this time last year. The median price of an existing single-family home sold through MLS in southern Nevada in February was $424,995, which is down 5.6 percent from February of last year, according to a report from Las Vegas REALTORS®. According to Redfin, for the same time period in northern Nevada, the median sale price of a single-family home in Reno is $490,000 which is down 7.5 percent compared to February of last year.
Brightline Partners with State Building Trades
The State Building and Construction Trades Council of California and the Southern Nevada Building Trades Union announced a memorandum of understanding with Brightline West to build a high-speed rail system connecting Las Vegas and southern California. The agreement means Brightline West will be built with unionized labor in California and Nevada. Brightline West is a 218-mile system connecting Las Vegas and southern California with trains capable of speeds up to 200 miles per hour.
Hospitals Recognized with Patient Safety Award
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center and North Vista Hospital have been recognized by Healthgrades as a 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient. This is the seventh consecutive year Saint Mary’s has been recognized and previously was the only hospital in the state to receive the distinction. The award is given to hospitals that excel in preventing serious injuries during hospital stays.
Opportunity Village Releases Community Impact Analysis
Compiled by Applied Analysis, Opportunity Village (OV) recently released its Community Impact Analysis. The report found that, over the past five years, OV has saved Nevadan taxpayers $127.7 million and saved $16.6 million in the last year alone. The program has provided employment opportunities to an average of 1,373 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities each year. OV generates social contributions through public awareness, charity events, private partnerships and volunteer programs.
UNR Extension Creates Program for Educators
The University of Nevada, Reno Extension has launched a program called “Spiral Up” to provide access to training and coaching for childcare workers. The program is offered at no cost and consists of seven weeks of virtual training, individual coaching and independent online training. At the program’s conclusion, participants would have completed all the licensing requirements within the first 120 days of employment, apart from CPR and first aid.
