UNLV Launches New Insurance Industry Center
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Lee Business School has established the Keretesi Center for Insurance and Risk Management. The result of a $5 million gift from the Nevada Surplus Lines Foundation, the center will advance faculty and student research in insurance and risk management. The center is also expected to serve as a resource for students seeking career opportunities in the industry.
DFS Seeks Foster Parents for Teenagers and Sibling Groups
Clark County’s Department of Family Services (DFS) has announced a high number of teenagers and sibling groups entering foster care. DFS is asking Clark County residents to consider becoming foster parents and offers expedited training for families at the end of July and early in August. Training typically lasts nine weeks, expedited training is a two-week process. At any given time, there are between 30 to 40 teenagers at Child Haven due to a shortage in foster parents and there are over 3,400 children in Clark County’s foster care. UNR Offers Farm Apprenticeship Program
The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has started a farm apprenticeship program for small-scale farmers. The program provides the opportunity to serve a one-year apprenticeship to bolster participant’s abilities to start and run a small-scale operation. Participants will receive a $40,000 stipend, based on an average of 32 program hours a week. The apprenticeship is hosted at UNR’s Desert Farming Initiative and is expected to be the first certified farm apprenticeship program in Nevada. It’s pending certification from the Nevada Department of Labor.
Nevada Mining Association Hosts Paid Internship Program
The Nevada Mining Association (NVMA) in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management has announced the return of the 360 Internship Program. The program helps prepare students for a career in STEM by providing a “360-degree view” of Nevada’s mining industry. This will be the program’s fourth consecutive year. Student Angel Morales was chosen as an intern with the SSR Mining’s Marigold Mine for a 10-week internship. Morales is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management from the College of Southern Nevada. The program is open to students enrolled at an accredited four-year college majoring in mining or environmental science-related fields.
