UNLV Awarded Nevada State Scholarship for New Degree Program
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has launched Nevada’s first bachelor’s degree program in Insurance and Risk Management. Tuition costs for the entire first class of students were covered by a gift from the Nevada Surplus Lines Foundation. After seeing the success of the new program, the foundation has awarded another $2.6 million to offset tuition costs for the next three classes of students. The new gift will support up to 180 insurance and risk management students with each eligible for up to $15,000 in scholarships to cover the cost of the final two years of the degree.
Board Moves Programs Online
After 15 years of offering the Business Assistance and Licensing Programs, the Nevada State Contractors Board has moved both programs to an online format. Previously offered in person and online once per month, the programs are now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Aspiring contractors can view information on the licensing application process, license classifications, tips for Nevada contractors and other valuable resources at their convenience.
Nevada’s First Anesthesiologist Assistant Program Launches
Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has announced a partnership with U.S. Anesthesia Partners-Nevada to open the NSU Health Nevada Regional Campus in Henderson, the first to offer a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) program in the state. The program’s first cohort consists of 26 students who will begin a 27-month program this summer. The campus has on-site simulation labs and state-of-the-art operating rooms.
The Great Reno Expands STEM Program
The Great Reno Balloon Race (GRBR) will expand the tissue paper hot air balloon program this year. This program gives the event the nonprofit distinction as Washoe County fifth graders are tasked with constructing tissue paper hot air balloons in the classroom. The lesson teaches them principles related to buoyancy, air temperature, engineering design, teamwork and problem-solving. The students then launch their creations following the GRBR mass ascension during the race. The expansion for this year’s race, which occurs September 10-13, will add an additional launch day, allowing hundreds more students to participate in the hands-on experience.
