UNR Wins NSF Engines Development Award
The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has been awarded a Type-1 Engine award which consists of approximately $1 million from the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines (NSF) program. UNR is one of 44 teams to receive one of the first-ever NSF Engines Development Awards. The intention of the program is to help partners collaborate to create economic, societal and technological opportunities for their regions. In Nevada, this award will support a two-year process of lithium battery workforce and economic development.
Nevada Enacts Bill to Protect Living Organ Donors
Recently bill SB132, was signed into law. The bill is designed to reduce barriers to living organ donation by prohibiting life, disability and long-term care insurers from discriminating against living organ donors. The passage of the bill moved Nevada from an “F” grade to a “D” grade on the American Kidney Fund’s “State of the States: Living Donor Protection Report Card”.
Nevada State Police No Longer Providing 24/7 Coverage
In early May the Nevada Police Union released a statement that the Nevada Highway Patrol levels have reached such a critical level that the department will no longer provide 24/7 coverage. The notice announced that, between the hours of 2:00 am to 5:00 am Reno and Sparks will have no assigned coverage.
Nevada Controller Opposes Biden Mortgage Policy
Joining a coalition of 34 state financial officers, Nevada Controller Andy Matthews has signed a letter criticizing the Biden administration for a Federal Housing Finance Agency policy which will make it more expensive for people with good credit to buy homes. Matthews said, “This new policy unjustly punishes those who have acted responsibly, sacrificed and worked hard toward a secure financial future for themselves and their families. It is outrageous and insulting that the Biden administration would adopt a policy that perversely removes Americans’ incentives to manage their finances wisely and prudently.”
