Reno, Nev. – For thousands of years, New Year’s resolutions have inspired people to make meaningful changes. While the specifics vary for everyone, the goal is often the same: improving one’s life or circumstances. Imagine if your resolution could truly change the trajectory of your life. Last October, Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada introduced Elevating Families, an innovative method of economic mobility mentoring designed to empower families with the tools they need to overcome challenges and achieve long-term success.
Within just the first six months of the program, participants from a wide range of challenging backgrounds have experienced success. Whether nearly homeless, dealing with domestic violence, or balancing multiple jobs, many have achieved results they once deemed out of reach. Now, as the new year begins, families have an opportunity to make life-changing resolutions through this transformative program.
“Elevating Families has been a game-changer for those stuck in cycles of financial stress, striving to build better futures for their children, or seeking opportunities for meaningful employment,” said Marie Baxter, CEO of Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. “The start of the year is the perfect time for parents to learn about this life-changing program.”
Participants are paired with dedicated mentors who work with them as they set achievable goals and develop strategies to overcome barriers holding them back. Participants of the program have already experienced significant successes, proving the program’s effectiveness.
The program is open to ongoing applications from qualified individuals. Qualified adult applicants must be residents of Washoe County, under the age of 55 with at least one child who is 13 years of age or younger. And be willing and able to work. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the website to learn more and start the eligibility process. The program is open to English and Spanish speaking families.
Parent participants start their journey interacting with the EMPath Bridge to Self-Sufficiency and work with their certified mentor to plan, reach, and sustain their personal goals in five essential areas: family stability, well-being, education and training, financial management, and employment and career management.
“We’ve seen incredible success stories from participants who never believed escaping poverty was possible,” said Jessica Sheldon, director of Elevating Families. “As a social worker, this is the kind of impact I’ve always dreamed of making. Watching participants take control of their lives and make transformative decisions has been truly remarkable.”
