Ms. Foley,
I am writing in response to Ms. Mary Ella Holloway’s opinion on vouchers published in the November issue of Nevada Business Journal.
I am the vice principal of Mountain View Christian Schools, a private school serving students from preschool through 12th grade. When Ms. Holloway opines about the affect of vouchers on education, she displays a significant lack of knowledge considering her position.
We are required, as are all private schools, by the Private Elementary and Secondary Education Authorization Act (NRS 394) to inform the public that we do not discriminate based upon gender and race. To plant such statements is a gross misconduct of responsibility, considering Ms. Holloway’s position as the president of the Clark County Education Association. It is more than reasonable to expect a professional who is the head of an organization committed to education to have all of their facts before writing such opinions.
Furthermore, Ms. Holloway did not cite from what sources she based her claims that the 1993 California program and the 1992 Colorado program would cost $2 billion and $350 million respectively.
As an educator, my primary vision is to provide the very best education possible for the children of our community. In an age of openness, it is amazing that the primary provider of education (the public system) is so close-minded to any program which threatens its monopoly on education.
