How did you get into this line of work?
I grew up surrounded by the home-building business. My father was a developer in Scottsdale, AZ, who specialized in building single-family homes.
How do you motivate your team?
I inspire my team by developing genuine connections with them and fostering those relationships. When others perceive your dedication and authentic interest, they’ll run through walls for you.
What career advice would you give to someone just starting?
Find your fire! Let your career be fueled by your passion, and let that drive you towards your goals.
What is an issue currently facing your industry an outside observer may not be aware of?
The primary challenge facing the home building industry is the need for more skilled labor to enter the workforce. Blue Heron devotes a lot of focus to recruiting top talent, while Nevada supports the future workforce with initiatives like The Southern Nevada Trades High School, offering construction career paths
What would be the title of your autobiography?
“How to Cultivate Leaders.” Creating resilient, lasting relationships is crucial in business. Before Blue Heron, I mentored seven people in the home-building who became division presidents or business owners, including the first female president of a publicly traded home-building company.
What is the most difficult experience you encountered as a leader?
Navigating the politics involved in public home building can be challenging. Success in this field is frequently dependent on the person in a superior position, which can have a substantial adverse effect on one’s overall experience.
What do you hope future generations can learn from your professional journey?
Find a mentor who you trust and who has experience in your field. Second, make it a habit to meet with someone outside of your industry at least once a month to exchange insights and knowledge. And lastly, pursue what you’re passionate about, and everything else will fall into place.
