Museum Store Holiday Sale, Projects in The Shop, Camp Discovery, Survival of the Slowest and moreRENO, Nev. – There’s no shortage of things to do, see, make and explore this holiday season at the Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum (The Discovery), the place to experience science.
Special Holiday Hours
The Discovery will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and will have reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Though normally closed on Mondays, the museum will be open with special hours on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.
Museum Store Holiday Sale – Nov. 25
Shoppers can skip the Black Friday madness and make plans to shop the Museum Store holiday sale at The Discovery where they’ll find Reno’s best selection of the smartest toys, games, gadgets, apparel, puzzles, science kits, and more. Everything in the store is 30% off from 8 to 10 a.m. and 20% off from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Open Build in The Shop: Wood – Nov. 26
In this material-specific session of Open Build, builders age seven and up will use real tools to build nearly anything they can imagine out of wood. Best of all, what they create is theirs to keep! The Shop offers access to real tools and materials that can cause injury if used improperly. Parents are encouraged to help young tinkerers use the tools and materials safely in this space. Available from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Included with museum admission.
Open Build in The Shop: Fabric – Nov. 30
In this material-specific session of Open Build, makers age seven and up will use real tools like a sewing machine, hot glue and fabric glue to create nearly anything they can imagine out of fabric and take their creations home. Parents are encouraged to help young ones use the tools and materials safely in this space. Available from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Included with museum admission.
DIY Snuffle Mat – Dec. 3
The Discovery is teaming up with the Nevada Humane Society for a special project in The Shop with furry friends in mind. Using a variety of fabrics and a gridded mat, creators age seven and up will make a toy they can hide treats in to keep their dog or cat occupied for hours. Available from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Included with museum admission.
Camp Discovery – Dec. 26-30 and Jan. 2-6
The Discovery is hosting two exciting weeks of science during Camp Discovery’s winter break 2022/23 session. Choose from the unique and exciting camps for students in kindergarten through 4th grade. Camp Discovery’s camps begin each day at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Early drop-off at 8 a.m. and late pick up until 5:30 p.m. are available. Space is limited. Survival of the Slowest – through Jan. 8, 2023
Evolution can be tricky – even though the large, fast and strong seem to have the upper hand, sometimes being slow, small or weak has its advantages. Survival of the Slowest, the newest limited exhibition at The Discovery, features a menagerie of live animals that embody the old adage “slow and steady wins the race.”
At 10,000 square feet, Survival of the Slowest is The Discovery’s largest exhibition to date and features 19 habitats populated by nature’s most notorious slowpokes, including a red-footed tortoise, green iguana, four-toed hedgehog, bearded dragon, ball python – and the undeniable star of the show – Sash, a two-year-old, female two-toed sloth who acts as the unofficial representative for glacially-paced creatures across the globe.
Although the animals are slow, the exhibition’s stay at The Discovery is going fast. See Survival of the Slowest before it’s gone. The exhibition is included with museum admission.
