How did you first get into your profession?
My best subjects in high school were math and science, which led me to pursue an engineering degree. Once I started college, I decided on chemical engineering, as I had a scholarship with that department. I liked it enough to go on to earn a master’s degree.
What business advice would you give someone just starting in your industry?
You need to have good people working with you and for you, and you need to pay attention to what they say. You should never underestimate the value of the observations and experience coming from those on the front line.
What is the biggest challenge your industry is facing?
The biggest challenge to the U.S. chemical industry is the fact that we have to compete in a global market in which some countries don’t have the same regulatory restrictions. To stay competitive with those global markets, we must be more efficient at what we do, or we have to make a higher quality product.
