What was your first job?

I was a dishwasher when I was 14.

Who in your life has been instrumental to your success?

There are many individuals instrumental to my success, but none as important as my parents in their love, support, guidance and moral compass.

What do you want your legacy to be?

This is an interesting question, I’d like my legacy to be the success of my children and being part of a team that makes our world better. [That means] having the most cutting edge medical school that truly prepares our future medical workforce and decreases the disparities that are in our community.

What is the title of your autobiography?

“Waking up in America” Published, 1999 by Simon and Schuster.

What is an issue currently facing your industry an outside observer might not be aware of?

The medical industry will be going through incredible changes in the next few years to decade, all I believe for the better. This ranges from electronic to therapeutic, to delivery of care.

What was the toughest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

Dealing with people’s life, illness and loss never gets easy.

If you had to live in another country for a year, which would you choose?

I would choose Italy for its culture, art, lifestyle and, of course, the food.

What is the best moment of your career?

When my wife agreed to marry me in my third year of medical school (1981). She kept me on task, and on track, and still is doing so to this day. Also, I was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, which is a moment I will never forget.
