Who in your life has been instrumental to your success?
My wife, Leilani, who has been an integral part of my business and personal life since we met at the University of Nevada in 1986. She currently works with me as our chief financial officer at Stable Development.
What was your first job?
My first full-time job after baseball was as an accountant at Ernst & Young CPA’s.
What do you want your legacy to be?
DTBG – Dare to Be Great – I have always impressed this upon our three children. Put 110 percent into anything that you do and dare to follow your dreams and passions.
What career advice would you give to your teenage self?
Work smarter, not harder. I sometimes feel that we missed opportunities in our journey that could have made a major impact to our growth.
What is the best moment of your career?
As a commercial real estate developer, surviving the great recession in Las Vegas amongst a devastated office market was a big accomplishment for me. Everyone can be successful when things are going well, but to overcome tough challenges and find success was special.
What was the toughest lesson you’ve learned in your career?
Don’t lend your name to companies unless you are actively involved with them.
What is an issue currently facing your industry an outside observer might not be aware of?
The impact of rising construction related costs from changes involving trade agreements with China and other countries.
What is your motto?
Don’t worry about the problem, focus on the solution.
If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be and what would you have?
Iron Man for a simple steak dinner and a great bottle of wine. He’s full of solutions and, more importantly, has a great sense of humor.
If you had to live in another country for a year, which would you choose and why?
Italy for the food, history, culture and wine.
