How did you get into your profession?
It all started when I sold our family restaurant in California, and I was searching for a new business to pursue. At the time my close friends were developing shopping centers in the Inland Empire, and I found their experiences fascinating. At about the same time I discovered an unmet need in Lake Havasu for boat and RV storage.
Who has been instrumental to your success?
My wife, Cathy Jones. She has been my biggest supporter and is often times a voice of reason. She is much smarter than I am, and I value her opinion.
What metrics do you consider important when hiring?
Integrity and competence – while these are hard to measure during an interview, they are imperative in business and life. People want to do business with people they trust and are the best in their field.
What is an issue currently facing your industry that an outside observer might not be aware of?
Land –this limited resource is needed to balance housing, conservation and economic growth.
What is your favorite business book?
“The Age of Turbulence” by Alan Greenspan. [It’s] not a business book as much as it is a macroeconomic recount of several past administrations. I believe that macroeconomics controls much of our everyday lives.
What would be the title of your autobiography?
“Where Is He?”
What is the best moment of your career?
I am the proudest of being asked to become a partner with Panattoni. It was evidence that I have built the trust of our leadership and forged great relationships with our clients.
What is an assumption people make about you that is wrong?
At first meeting me people think I may be more reserved and quieter, but it is just shyness. Once I get to know people, I build good, lasting friendships and really open up.
What do you hope future generations can learn from your professional journey?
The path is never straight. You will learn valuable lessons with everything you do whether it’s customer service, financial markets, transactions or relationships.
