I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education.
Thomas Jefferson
Those words were written by Jefferson in a letter dated September 28, 1820. Now, just over 200 years later, they are surprisingly applicable to the times in which we find ourselves. The United Statesā government is unique from any other form of rule that came before it, primarily because it has always maintained that the power of rule should belong to the people. That simple foundation has been the cornerstone upon which America was built. A cornerstone cannot be removed without the entire structure falling.
And yet, we find ourselves with a government that seeks to take more and more power from the people and shore it up for itself. We see an example of this nearly every day. Here in Nevada, Stephen Lara, a Marine veteran, is suing the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) for the seizure of his life savings in February. The man had every right to keep his money where he liked, and he chose to keep it in a backpack in his vehicle as he drove to visit his two daughters in California. When NHP pulled him over, Lara cooperated and answered honestly when asked if he had a large amount of money in his vehicle. Despite no evidence of anything illegal (he wasnāt even given a ticket for the original reason for which he was pulled over), the officers seized the money and turned it over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
On a national scale we see a daily reminder of government overreach from the false moralistic outrage of progressive politicians to the dictatorial attitude towards body autonomy. Parents are having to fight to keep schools from teaching politics to their children. Progressive and liberal politicians are chomping at the bit to pack the Supreme Court every time that body of government makes a decision it disagrees with. Keep in mind the judicial branch of government was designed to be a fair and nonpartisan arbiter of law.
Finally, the rise of national vaccine mandates simply cannot be ignored. There is no clearer example of government overreach than an administration unilaterally making decisions for an individualās physical body. Personally, I think the vaccine is an important tool in recovering from this pandemic. I also think each of us have the sole right to decide what is best, health-wise, for ourselves.
Call to Action: What will it take for the citizens of this country to stop a tyrannical government? Must we have a repeat of the War for Independence or can we learn from the efforts of our Founding Fathers? Honestly, enough is enough. We must not relinquish even one more individual right to the government. The only way to stop this stealing of control is to take it back for ourselves. We must elect good leaders who understand that government serves the people, not the other way around.
