How did you get into your profession?
I found my way into the AEC industry through a mutual contact. He was an executive for an engineering and consulting company and recruited me to come work for the company, first as a project manager. Over time, I worked my way up to be a Regional Vice President. Fast forward to today and I now have two decades of experience in engineering services, construction, M&A, and leadership development.
What career advice would you give to someone just starting in your industry?
Be humble; learn as much as you can about the industry. I’ve overseen projects of all sizes across multiple sectors — from federal and transportation to commercial and industrial. But the key is to treat each one as a learning opportunity.
What is an issue currently facing your industry an outside observer may not be aware of?
We face the challenge of constant changes in codes and requirements for multiple jurisdictions: local, city, state, and federal. Every few years, the leadership of the regulatory agencies can change, and this often results in new interpretation of codes and processes, which can slow down projects.
What is your favorite business book?
“Lessons from the Titans: What Companies in the New Economy Can Learn from the Great Industrial Giants to Drive Sustainable Success.” I think it’s important to learn how past industry leaders have achieved their success through vision and grit and determine how those lessons can be applied to today’s economy.
What is the best moment of your career?
Seeing one of my former employees promoted to an executive position, someone I had mentored throughout my career.
What was the most difficult experience you encountered as a leader?
My most difficult experience was seeing a serious workplace injury. Because of that experience, workplace safety is one of my biggest passions. Continually focusing on safety practices is essential.
