How did you get into your profession?
As a physician, my work has centered on treating patients after they’ve become ill. However, I’ve always believed that food is medicine, which inspired me to start MDMeals, with the goal of creating meals that support healing while playing a vital role in disease prevention.
What career advice would you give to someone just starting in your industry?
To be successful you need hard work, and to enjoy the journey you need to be passionate about what you do.
What metrics do you consider important when hiring and /or reviewing employees?
Honesty and motivation – with these qualities you can improve communications, remove obstacles, and set the right expectations to achieve the desired results.
What is an issue currently facing your industry that an outside observer might not be aware of?
The increasing influence of non-medical individuals in decisions that impact both patient care and broader healthcare policies. Insurance companies and hospital administrators dictate many of the medications or tests health care providers can order. Even politicians, without medical expertise, make policy decisions that profoundly affect our ability to provide care. This trend is not only concerning, but continues to worsen.
How do you motivate your team?
I focus on highlighting the value of their work and the impact of their contributions, in order to foster a sense of purpose and belonging. I also make it a priority to ensure that everyone feels appreciated and recognized for their unique role within the team.
What was the most difficult experience you encountered as a leader?
Working to integrate our medical meals into the daily routines of people with chronic medical conditions. While the benefits are clear, achieving this requires significant shifts on multiple fronts: changing long-standing eating habits, encouraging medical providers to prioritize discussions about nutrition and meal program options, and advocating for insurance companies to recognize the value of these meals by including them in their benefits.
