RENO, Nev. – The Reno Rodeo Association Mutton Bustin’ Championships are set to stampede into action during Kids’ Day on Sunday, June 23, 2024 in the Reno Livestock Events Center Indoor Arena. Starting March 1, applications for this sheep-riding showdown will be open to the public.
Designed with young buckaroos in mind, Kids’ Day promises an entire day of western-themed fun, featuring interactive activities, live displays and the main event—the 8th Annual Mutton Bustin’ Championship. This highly anticipated event provides pint-sized riders with the opportunity to mount their sheep, hold on tight and ride across the arena for as long as possible. It’s important to note that the 8th Annual Mutton Bustin’ Championship is distinct from the mutton bustin’ that takes place during evening performances—the championship is presented as part of Reno Rodeo Kids’ Day, a free event uniting local businesses and nonprofits to educate children on the rich traditions of rodeo, agriculture and the Western lifestyle.
To secure a spot in the corral, eligible contestants must be no less than five years of age, no more than seven years of age and may not weigh more than 65 pounds as of June 20, 2024. Participants will be required to don authentic Western attire, including long-sleeved shirts, pants and boots. Helmets and vests, generously provided by sponsors, are mandatory during the ride. Only participants and one adult wrangler will be permitted in the chute area to ensure a secure and safe experience for all.
Check-in will start at 9:45 a.m. on Kids’ Day, where participants will receive back numbers for identification. The event comprises five go-rounds, each featuring 20 participants, with the top ten advancing to the 8th Annual Reno Rodeo Mutton Bustin’ Championship. Trophies await the top three riders, and the ultimate champion will score a coveted belt buckle.
Applications will open on the Reno Rodeo website on Friday, March 1 a.m. and close on Tuesday, March, 5. There is no fee to apply. A computerized draw on Wednesday, March 6 at 10 a.m. will determine the lucky 100 participants, with additional applicants placed on a waiting list.

The “Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West” returns to the Biggest Little City for the 105th year June 20–29. Attendees can expect to see bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding and more. With 10 exciting nights of rodeo competition, the Reno Rodeo is one of the premier stops on the Pro Rodeo Tour. The action isn’t just in the competition, however. There’s also a full carnival, the Double R Marketplace, day events (many are free), a food court, the Jack tent and much more.
