Mental health matters—for everyone. But when it comes to men, stigma and silence can be powerful barriers to getting the help they need. As June marks Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, Boys Town is amplifying the message that prioritizing emotional well-being is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Boys Town Behavioral Health experts are joining the national conversation to break down stereotypes, offer support, and promote practical solutions for boys and men facing mental health challenges.
“One of the most dangerous myths we hear is that men are supposed to ‘tough it out’ when they’re struggling,” said Dr. Tara Borsh, Director, Boys Town Nevada Behavioral Health. “The truth is, emotional resilience comes from learning how to manage stress, express your feelings in healthy ways, and ask for support when you need it.”
According to the CDC, men die by suicide nearly four times more often than women. While women are more likely to attempt suicide, men are more likely to use lethal methods—making their attempts far more likely to result in death. Middle-aged and older men, in particular, represent the highest risk group, but rising rates of mental health concerns in young males are also cause for concern.
Across Boys Town’s national network of behavioral health clinics, school-based services, and community outreach programs, clinicians are seeing the toll unaddressed mental health issues can take on young boys, teens, and adult men—from anxiety and depression to anger, social isolation, and substance use.
Common warning signs include:
Difficulty managing emotions or anger
Withdrawal from family and friends
Fatigue or trouble sleeping
Increased use of alcohol or drugs
Feelings of hopelessness or irritability
Boys Town Nevada encourages families to talk openly about emotions and mental wellness, especially with the boys and men in their lives. In addition to clinical services, Boys Town offers 24/7 support through its National Hotline (800-448-3000), and expert-backed tips through the Boys Town Parenting website and Boys Town Press resources.
