Builders Association and STEP2 Unveil Final Renovated Cottages in Celebration of National Recovery Month
(October 1, 2024 – Reno, Nev.) – In honor of National Recovery Month, the Builders Association and its charitable arm, the Builders Association Charity (BAC), joined STEP2 staff, board members, and local home builders celebrated the 8th Annual BAC2Gether event unveiling the final three cottages on STEP2’s Lighthouse Campus to receive a makeover.
“The collaboration over the past eight years with the Builders Association, home builders, subcontractors, and suppliers, who have so generously donated their time, materials, and expertise, has been an incredible gift to our clients and staff,” said Mari Hutchinson, CEO of STEP2. “These cottages are more than just a place of solace. For many of our women, they represent the first safe and sober home they’ve ever had. The unveiling of these newly renovated cottages is a significant milestone in their recovery journey and a powerful reminder of the possibilities ahead.”
Over the course of the partnership, the Builders Association, the Builders Association Charity, and their homebuilder, subcontractor, and supplier members have refurbished all 25 cottages on the STEP2 campus, donating services and materials at no cost to STEP2. This collaboration has provided an estimated benefit of over one million dollars, transforming these homes into safe, welcoming spaces for women striving to improve their lives.
In June of this year, three northern Nevada homebuilders—Di Loreto Homes of Nevada, Ryder Homes, and Toll Brothers—along with their subcontractors and suppliers, each adopted one of the last remaining one-bedroom cottages. They donated their time, services, and materials to give the more than 20-year-old homes a much-needed facelift. This unveiling event celebrates the completion of these extensive renovations, which are being used by Reno-area women recovering from substance use disorders.
This year’s Recovery Month theme, “Every Person, Every Family, Every Community,” emphasizes that treatment and recovery empower individuals, families, and communities to heal and thrive.
“The Recovery Month theme reminds us that it truly takes a community to support the women who are courageously working toward a brighter future,” said Corry Castaneda, president of the Builders Association Charity board. “The refurbishment of these cottages is just one small part of our community’s commitment to their success. We are humbled and proud to play a role in the recovery journey of STEP2’s clients.”
While each cottage typically receives a refresh after a family transitions from the STEP2 program, this is the first time these three cottages have undergone such comprehensive makeovers. The unveiling provides builders and the STEP2 community a first look at the completed homes.
The total estimated cost to renovate, install new appliances, and update décor and furnishings for each cottage exceeds $70,000. This includes new paint, carpeting, and the modernization of kitchens and bathrooms with new appliances and products. Clients who move into the cottages are also able to take the furnishings with them when they transition to independent living.
