Ty Bates has been honored with the 2019 Operations Supervisor in the Spotlight Award from Complete Association Management Company LLC (CAMCO).
Bates has been with the property management company for about three and a half years, the past year as its front desk manager. And in that time, her superiors have taken note of her leadership and hard work, which earned her the reward in December.
“In the three years Ty has been with CAMCO, she has shown great leadership skills within her department,” said Business Operations Manager Lisa Hopkins, who is Bates’ supervisor. “Ty represents both excellent internal and external customer service.”
Customer service has been Bates’ career focus, although it wasn’t always in property management. After graduating from the College of Southern Nevada with associates degrees in front office administration and criminal justice, she worked as a teller for U.S. Bank, through which she also attended teller/banking school. After four years, she moved into the behavioral health field, serving as a receptionist for Triumphant Family Services. When that company closed its doors, Bates, who was seven months pregnant at the time, took time off to have her baby. When she decided to head back to work, she was hired at CAMCO as a receptionist and was promoted to front desk manager in September 2018.
“I just opened myself up to the ability to change,” Bates said. “At first, it felt like a complete change from banking to behavioral health to property management. But then I realized it’s all about communication, and once I got the communication down, it opened doors to all the opportunities this job has for me.”
And now she is encouraging her team to pursue those opportunities, as well.
“In management, you sometimes get persuaded to have people do what you want. But this leadership opportunity has inspired me to let my team have open minds to do what they want,” Bates said. “I let them have the opportunities to grow. I delegate a lot of things; if I feel a team member is capable of doing something, I will give that person the opportunity to do that. I want them to pursue their dreams with the company. I want them to do and learn what they desire. I feel that keeping those doors open for growth has gotten our team to where we are at now.”
And she hasn’t stopped learning herself. She has attended leadership seminars and is taking a management class through Fred Pryor Seminars to further her skills. She also hopes that by the end of the year, at least one receptionist on her team will take the class to start shaping their leadership skills.
Bates also is a big encouragement to the rest of CAMCO’s staff. As part of the company’s CAMCO Cares program, she inspires others to give donations and volunteer time to causes such as Construction vs. Cancer and cancer walks with the American Cancer Society. On her own time, she gets her husband and five kids involved as she volunteers and donates to Shade Tree and St. Jude. This year, she also plans to volunteer with Catholic Charities of Nevada.
“It’s important to me because at any time in life, your world can be flipped upside down,” Bates said. “So it’s important to me to get out there and bring awareness to a lot of things, especially to those less fortunate. You never know how you might inspire somebody.”
