CATHOLIC CHARITIES’ ELEVATING FAMILIES PROGRAM SEES SUCCESS IN FIRST TEN MONTHS
~ Now is the Perfect Time to Apply ~
Reno, Nev. (September 4, 2024) – In October 2023, Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada introduced Elevating Families, an innovative program dedicated to economic mobility mentoring that empowers families with essential problem-solving skills for lasting success. Within the first ten months, participants from a wide range of challenging backgrounds have experienced success. Whether nearly homeless, dealing with domestic violence, or balancing multiple jobs, many have achieved results they once deemed out of reach. With students now back in school, this is an ideal time for families seeking to improve their circumstances to apply to Elevating Families.
“Elevating Families has been successful in helping those who are caught in a cycle of financial stress, striving to improve their children’s futures, or possess the skills for better employment but face barriers they can’t overcome” said Marie Baxter, CEO of Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. “Now that school has started and our kids are focused on learning, it’s a great time for parents to make a shift and apply for the program.”
Participants are paired with dedicated mentors who work closely with parents as they set goals and identify strategies to overcome the obstacles that have been holding them back. Several of the participants have experienced success and are feeling confident in the steps they are taking.
“It depends how you work the program, but it really does change a person’s life,” said a participant who began working after being out of the workforce for 10 years, built a savings account and improved her mental and physical wellbeing.
The program is actively recruiting applicants who meet minimum qualifications. Qualified adult applicants must be residents of Washoe County, under the age of 55 with at least one child who is 13 years of age or younger. Applicants can be married or single. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the website to learn more and start a one-time application process. The program is open to 300 English and Spanish speaking families.
Parent participants start their journey interacting with the EMPath Bridge to Self-Sufficiency and work with their certified mentor to plan, reach, and sustain their personal goals in five essential areas: family stability, well-being, education and training, financial management, and employment and career management.
“I have a ton of learning to do, but I think change is good,” said a single parent participant who after working multiple jobs to support her family secured new employment allowing her to work less and spend more time with her family.
