Kirk Stowers, principal geologist and environmental division manager at Broadbent & Associates Inc., delivered a presentation at the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists, revealing innovative strategies for the remediation, reclamation, and funding of the Three Kids Mine Site for residential reuse. Stowers outlined the site’s extensive history, spanning from its operation as a manganese mine during WWI and WWII to its current condition. Stowers also spotlighted the groundbreaking funding mechanism employed, which utilizes tax increment financing to facilitate the cleanup and future development, thereby setting a precedent for similar projects nationwide.
