Local nonprofit, Communities In Schools (CIS) of Western Nevada, is launching its 10th Annual “Fill the Bus” school supply drive, collecting essential school supplies and hygiene products for students and families across Washoe County ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.The month-long drive supports more than 13,000 Washoe County School District students in 24 local high-needs schools, providing resources and support through evidence-based wraparound services.
Community members are encouraged to donate new school supplies or basic-needs items at one of our collection sites, make a monetary donation, or sponsor this year’s event. All contributions help ensure students have the tools they need to start the school year ready to learn and succeed.

The organization taps into a statewide network of more than 120 community nonprofits, partners, and agencies, literally bringing the community into the school to get students whatever they need to overcome the barriers they face that prevent them from achieving academically. From eyeglasses, dental care, health care, and professional counseling to food, school supplies, clothing, transportation, and even housing, CIS identifies students’ needs and finds ways to address them, closing the gaps they experience in their everyday lives. CIS’ long-term vision is for every child enrolled in a Title I or high-needs school to have access to a CIS site coordinator and their evidence-based model of Integrated Student Supports, otherwise known as wraparound services.
