Non-profit recently awarded $150,000 grant from United Way of Southern Nevada to help strengthen efforts to empower, enrich and educate underserved children and their families to lead choice-filled lives
Non-profit CORE recently was awarded a 2021 Community Impact Grant from United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN). With a distribution of $50,000 a year over the next three years, this vital funding will help enable CORE to engage a new cohort of Scholars at the West Prep school site in the fall of 2021. This new cohort of scholars will be 6th graders who are just beginning their first year as middle school students. CORE maintains a long-term focus, and once onboarded the cohort will be engaged through seven years of programming designed to help them stay on track for their high school graduation and to achieve success beyond the classroom.
“This grant is so significant and impactful for CORE and the families we serve,” said Lindsay Harper, Founder and Executive Director of CORE. “We are so appreciative of United Way of Southern Nevada and proud to join their network of funded partners in the region. With these funds we can be on track for recruiting an entirely new group of 65 CORE Scholars at the start of the 21/22 school year. It will help build our community and change more lives.”
CORE, powered by The Rogers Foundation, is a long-term, two generational, holistic, and collective impact model serving under-resourced students (“Scholars”). CORE Scholars participate in afterschool and weekend programming; concurrently, their families work with CORE staff to develop support networks, continue their own education, and develop the skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. After graduation, Scholars are engaged with CORE through an Alumni Network to ensure that they remain supported and continue to reach for their potential.
CORE’s programming focuses on the individual needs of each Scholar and their family. For the families, the goal is to create stability in the home and to provide a pathway to better jobs and education. Meanwhile, CORE leaders work with each Scholar on developing personal pathways focusing on aligning their strengths with career and college opportunities, and providing the experiences and tools needed to lead choice filled lives in and out of school.
The 2021 UWSN Community Impact Grant aims to provide funding to agencies and coalitions that are helping rebuild Southern Nevada. According to UWSN, the 2021 Community Impact Grants will strengthen organizations that serve children, families, and workers in an effort to support recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic while looking ahead to the future of the Southern Nevada community.
