Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School, Nevada’s largest private school and the United States’ largest Lutheran secondary school, has opened enrollment for its 2023-24 school year by adding flexible online and hybrid learning through the school’s Faith Lutheran Online program.
With more than 40 courses ready for fall 2023, and more in development, Faith Lutheran Online will offer a full slate of core classes needed for graduation, along with advanced placement and honors classes, during its 15-week fall and spring terms.
Although Faith Lutheran has a waitlist for full-time on campus slots in many grades, high school students may take classes online and add more in person as class spaces open. Fully online programs may become hybrid then, if space allows, all on-campus.
Faith Lutheran Online students who carry full-time course loads may participate in any of Faith Lutheran’s extracurricular activities, which include competitive sports, fine arts, music and several clubs devoted to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) or humanities disciplines.
Faith Lutheran Online Director Anna Orr said reaching students in the Las Vegas Valley and beyond fits the school’s tradition and strategy. In particular, she said, Faith Lutheran has strived to serve students whose families cannot afford full-time tuition or who practice a non-Christian religion or no religion at all.
“We see our campus as a mission field, with 65% of our student population being unchurched, attending church a couple of times a year or non-Christian,” she said.
Also, Orr said, by allowing online and remote enrollment, Faith Lutheran can serve communities that lack the fiscal resources to offer Christian schools or Christian-rooted curriculums.
“In addition, Faith Lutheran Online also allows us to reach students in our valley who want or need a flexible learning schedule as well as those around the world who are seeking a US high school diploma or just looking to take a class that isn’t offered at their high school,” notes CEO Steve Buuck.
Students access classes through Grand Canyon University’s High School Partner platform; each class has a teacher who leads lessons, grades work and makes announcements.
Faith Lutheran also offers classes that other schools might not, including engineering and introductions to electronic music production and digital photography.
And the school offers classes for seventh graders and eighth graders, including health and first-year algebra and Spanish.
Online students may take classes singly to supplement curriculums from their schools or in clusters to earn a fully remote Faith Lutheran diploma.
Although Faith Lutheran’s courses are asynchronous, they’re not self-driven. Participation requirements keep students accountable and on track; teachers offer office hours, some on Zoom, each school week. Students may also use tutor.com to get extra help.
