April 22, 2026 (RENO, Nev.) – The Nevada Dairy Farmers has awarded $20,000 in scholarships to four outstanding University of Nevada, Reno students pursuing degrees in agricultural and veterinary science.
The recipients are: Melanie Burnett, Brianna España, Leilani Means and Akizcha Unating. Each student was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to support their continuing education. Scholarship recipients attend the University of Nevada, Reno and are a junior or senior with a declared major in agricultural science or veterinary science.
Melanie Burnett is pursuing a degree in veterinary science and is actively involved in leadership and agriculture organizations. With involvement in Future Farmers of America and a lifelong connection to ranching, Burnett has developed a strong passion for animal care and sustainable agriculture. She aspires to become a veterinarian serving both large and small animals while supporting agricultural communities and advancing responsible farming practices.
Brianna España is a veterinary science major dedicated to serving diverse and underserved agricultural communities. Inspired by her upbringing in a non–English-speaking household, España aims to become a bilingual veterinarian who improves access to animal care through communication, education and trust. She is passionate about supporting dairy and livestock producers while ensuring inclusive and equitable veterinary services.
Leilani Means is pursuing a degree in agricultural science with an emphasis in animal science. As a non-traditional student and mother, Means brings both academic and professional experience in laboratory research and scientific data management. She is passionate about applying data-driven solutions to improve livestock production, food safety and environmental sustainability, with the goal of strengthening agricultural systems for the future.
Akizcha Unating is majoring in veterinary science with a minor in rangeland ecology and management. After growing up in Las Vegas with limited exposure to agriculture, Unating found her passion working hands-on with livestock in northern Nevada. Through her experience managing cattle and sheep, she developed a strong commitment to becoming a large animal veterinarian and hopes to bridge the gap between producers and the public through education and transparency.
