LAS VEGAS/CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation (GOWINN) received approval from the U.S. Department of Labor to expand its H-1B Grant to include rural communities in southern Nevada. This comes after a rural tour of southern Nevada hospitals, medical centers, and academic institutions. Expansion of this grant program will bring H-1B Grant resources to Mesa View Hospital in Mesquite, Desert View Hospital in Pahrump, and Boulder City Hospital in Boulder City, Nevada.
In 2021, GOWINN was awarded $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Labor for the H-1B Rural Healthcare Grant to alleviate workforce shortages in
Nevada’s rural counties. GOWINN partners with Nevadaworks and the Nevada Hospital Association (NHA) by investing in training programs that lead to in-demand and high-paying career pathways in the growing healthcare sector. The program serves underserved and under/unemployed Nevadans residing in rural communities who are entering in-demand healthcare occupations.
“Bringing this program to more Nevada communities will lead to increased investment, strengthening the workforce talent pipeline and expanding healthcare access for rural Nevadans across the State,” said Lisa Levine, Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation.
“The NHA is proud to partner with GOWINN to expand this program. Together we will increase the development of Nevada’s health care workforce to rural communities who need greater access to services,” said Patrick Kelly, President and CEO of NHA.
In the last two years, this grant has provided workforce development services to Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Humboldt, Lander, Lincoln, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, and White Pine counties.
