The Henderson Professional Fire Fighters, in partnership with Henderson Hospital, the City of Henderson Fire Department, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation, and the City of Henderson Mayor and City Council, successfully launched the 2024 Safe Pools Rule! Public Education Campaign. This annual initiative, now in its twelfth year, aims to educate the public on drowning prevention, a leading cause of preventable and unintentional death among young children in southern Nevada.
The event, held at Wells Outdoor Swimming Pool, featured a series of remarks from key community partners, including Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero. The mayor emphasized the importance of water safety as summer approaches, urging every family in southern Nevada to make it a critical conversation. A mock drowning reenactment was also conducted, demonstrating the urgent response required during such emergencies and underscoring the campaign’s life-saving message.
“The Safe Pools Rule launch event marked another milestone in our ongoing efforts to prevent drowning incidents across southern Nevada,” said Dan Pentkowski, president of the Henderson Professional Fire Fighters. “Our goal is to ensure that every family understands the risks and takes the necessary precautions to keep their loved ones safe around water. Through this campaign, we aim to provide vital education and resources to the community and will continue to spread essential water safety information throughout the summer, reinforcing the message that with proper education and precautions, drownings can be prevented.”
According to the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), there were 46 submersion incidents reported in Clark County in 2023, with six resulting in fatal drownings. These statistics highlight the critical need for ongoing public education and awareness campaigns like Safe Pools Rule!, which strives to reduce these tragic incidents by educating the public.
