Group led by Ann Silver, CEO of the Reno + Sparks Chamber of Commerce, taps social media for its community project
Reno/Sparks – The Leadership Reno-Sparks Class of 2018 launched its community project called “3 in 30.” Organized by the Reno + Sparks Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by each participant’s employer, Leadership Reno-Sparks aims to identify and develop current and future leaders through a comprehensive program designed to increase knowledge and awareness of the issues and challenges facing the community. Participants are engaged in a nine-month program that focuses on growth opportunities through exposure to community leaders and issues, and culminates with a special community project that engages participants in a real-world exercise while also benefiting the community at large.
The “3 in 30” campaign aims to encourage more volunteerism throughout the community – to volunteer just 3 hours, to any organization or initiative that positively impacts the community, in 30 days. Tapping into the participants’ social media networks, the campaign contextualizes what just three hours means in day-to-day life.
“We want to encourage our peers to carve out just three hours, and give that time to a cause they care about,” said Julie Angst, IGT engineering manager and Class of 2018 participant. “Think about it: three hours can be used for a date night, a quick day trip with the kids, an evening Netflix binge – or doing something for someone else.”
Using the hashtag #3in30renosparks, the class will take to Facebook and Instagram with posts about how they plan to spend their extra three hours volunteering, encouraging (and almost challenging) those in their networks to do the same.
Those who want to participate in the challenge can visit https://www.3in30renosparks.com/ for more information. A link to a list of Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce non-profit organizations is included, along with previews of hash-tagged content.
The Class of 2018 has set a goal of logging at least 100 volunteer hours, and will celebrate this accomplishment with a river cleanup day and celebration at Idewild Park.
