Long gone are the days when it took months to find out about an unknown water leak on your property.
The Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD) now utilizes the latest in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology across the valley to help identify potential leaks in near-real time, saving significant amounts of water and helping customers avoid pricey water bills.
“A major benefit to this new technology is that we can see things faster than we’ve ever seen them before,” said JC Davis, LVVWD Director of Customer Care. “Customers are happy because they’re not racking up a big water bill. And on our end, we’re saving water by helping customers address these leaks sooner.”
Water usage data used to be collected from water meters once per month, but the use of AMI allows data to be transmitted each night to antennas throughout the valley that then relay information to the district.
If AMI detects unusually high-water use, customers with accurate contact information will receive a text alert or automated phone call from the LVVWD recommending they inspect their property for a potential leak or malfunction. The notifications help minimize the potential for unexpectedly high-water bills and help residential customers avoid excessive use charges.
“This system provides more real-time water use data for customers to help them take better control of their water use, address possible leaks, and save money,” said Davis.
The change also eliminates the need to drive every street each month to record usage data for LVVWD’s 430,000 residential and commercial customers since AMI collects the data remotely.
