How did you get into your profession?
My first professional career was with an industrial equipment vibration monitoring company. This gave me a glimpse into the process control world and piqued my interest.
Who has been instrumental to your success?
I learned at an early age to learn by doing. My father is good with mechanical systems, troubleshooting and rebuilding engines and machinery and I think I gained confidence in watching him do that. I wasn’t afraid to try new things and learn along the way.
What career advice would you give to someone just starting in your industry?
Continue your education through industry resources. The technology fields are continuously changing, and new products and techniques are rolling out in a way that makes it difficult to keep up.
What is an issue facing your industry an outside observer might not be aware of?
Many of those with extensive knowledge and skills are getting to the later part of their careers. There are not enough new people entering the industry to keep up even as we continue to automate more processes and facilities.
What was the most difficult experience you encountered as a leader?
Having to let someone go for not meeting expectations is always difficult. It’s a reflection of our organization in that we didn’t do something right. Whether during the hiring phase, onboarding or training we obviously missed something.
What workplace event are you looking forward to?
Our company is celebrating it’s 90th year of being in business. That’s an incredible milestone and I’m looking forward to celebrating this achievement with the entire company.
What do you hope future generations can learn from your professional journey?
Find something you enjoy doing and put in your time to become an expert. Be approachable so others can learn from you and if you teach them what you know, the payback in their gratitude and support will propel you to whatever you want to achieve.
