LAS VEGAS (Aug. 5, 2025) – The Nevada Bankers Association (NBA) is joining the nationwide recognition of Financial Awareness Day on Aug. 14 – a day dedicated to promoting financial literacy and empowering people and families to take control of their financial futures.
With many Nevadans facing financial challenges, the NBA urges residents to use this day as an opportunity to review their finances, set meaningful goals, and adopt smarter money habits.
“Financial Awareness Day is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a reminder that everyone has the power to shape their financial destiny,” said Phyllis Gurgevich, NBA president and CEO. “By making small, consistent changes, Nevadans can build a stronger financial foundation for themselves and their families.”
To mark the occasion, the association offers these top financial tips to help Nevadans establish good savings habits, improving their finances:
1. Pay yourself first. If you wait to see what’s left over, you are less likely to save. Determine in advance how much money you plan to save each month. If you receive a raise, increase the amount of money deposited into your savings account.
2. Take advantage of bank technology. Consider setting up automatic payroll deductions or automatic transfers from your checking account to your savings account. Arrange to have a specific amount transferred to your savings account every pay period.
3. Pay your bills on time and pay more than the minimum amount. Setting up automatic payments will ensure you never pay late fees.
4. Determine needs versus wants. Do you need to eat out for lunch every day? Do you need that gourmet cup of coffee in the morning? By preparing meals at home even a couple of days a week, you can save hundreds of dollars of year.
5. Shop around – whether it be for credit cards, bank accounts, or mortgages. There are thousands of financial products available, so make sure you pick the one right for your situation. Your banker can help you identify which products and services best suit your needs.
6. Consider high-yield savings accounts, Certificates of Deposit, money market accounts, as well as investments.
The NBA encourages everyone to seek out free educational resources, speak to their local bank representatives, and take advantage of the tools available to improve financial health.
“Together,” Gurgevich added, “we can build a more financially resilient Nevada.”
