HENDERSON, Nev. – Nevada State University kicked-off the 2024-25 academic year, marking the start of its 22nd year providing quality and affordable degree offerings to its students. The university welcomed 13 new faculty members, two new academic programs and held its inaugural Scorpion Smart Start Week ahead of the new school year.
“We are thrilled to welcome our Scorpions back to campus as the new academic year unfolds,” said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, president of Nevada State University. “We have an exciting year ahead; let us embrace every challenge as an opportunity to grow, innovate, and lead with purpose.”
Of the 13 new faculty members, seven have joined the School of Nursing, five have joined the School of Liberal Arts, Sciences and Business, and one has joined the School of Education. New academic programs include a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a concentration in Special Education, and an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) graduate degree in School Psychology.
“Expanding our academic offerings reflects our commitment to providing a diverse range of academic pathways that cater to the evolving interests and career goals of our students. By broadening our curriculum, we are ensuring that our students can pursue their passions while also preparing them to meet the workforce needs of our community.” continued Dr. Pollard.
New this year, Nevada State’s Scorpion Smart Start Week offered incoming first-year students a four-day experience the week before classes began that aimed to help freshmen transition smoothly into university life. More than 450 students participated in the four-day experience and were able to join in on various activities including a welcome barbeque; Nevada State’s annual Convocation Ceremony; and a First Year Fest where students were able to listen to a motivational speaker, take part in workshops and a resource fair, and enjoy music, games and food.
“We are constantly seeking ways to enrich the student experience at Nevada State, and the introduction of Scorpion Smart Start Week helps us connect more effectively with our incoming students,” said Dr. Stefanie Coleman, vice president of student affairs, Nevada State University. “We look forward to making this program a tradition and wish all our students success as classes begin.”
