RENO, Nev. – The Nevada Women’s Fund (NWF) is pleased to announce the opening of the 2024 scholarship cycle. Applications for 2024 scholarships will remain open until Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023, and awards will be announced in April 2024. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $5,000 and will assist Northern Nevada women pursuing higher education in a variety of fields.
Since awarding the first scholarship in 1983, the NWF has distributed more than $9.4 million in scholarships and grants to empower achievement in women and families in Northern Nevada. Though the dollar amount is significant, the impact of educating women goes beyond a measurable scope. Many of the scholarship recipients are re-entry women and single mothers who have not had the opportunity to complete their education due to family issues and/or financial constraints.
Unlike the traditional practice of sending funds directly to educational institutions, the NWF’s scholarships are given directly to each recipient. This approach empowers these women to decide how to allocate the funds in a manner that best serves their specific needs and those of their families. Whether it’s securing housing and transportation, putting food on the table, covering childcare expenses, purchasing textbooks or paying for tuition, this flexibility enhances the impact of even the minimum scholarship of $2,000. Funds may continue to be allocated until the completion of the degree, given the need and academic performance continue to be proven.
“We understand women may have barriers to education beyond needing tuition assistance, and we trust them to use the money they may be awarded in the way that will best help them achieve their educational pursuits,” said Ila Achtabowski, NWF President & CEO. “As we open the 2024 scholarship cycle, we’re not just awarding funds; we’re investing in the dreams, aspirations and futures of Northern Nevada’s women. We believe in the potential of all women, and together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change in our community.”
The scholarship awards support NWF’s mission of inspiring achievement in women and families to reach their full potential. The impact of the program extends beyond financial assistance — upon completion of a degree, recipients are more likely to reinvest in the community and inspire other women to pursue excellence in the face of adversity.
