Nevada Donor Network (NDN) is proud to announce that Dr. John Fung has joined the NDN Governing Board. He brings unique expertise, knowledge and passion that will help NDN expand their mission of saving and healing lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation.
Dr. Fung currently serves as the co-director of the University of Chicago Medicine Department of Transplantation and as a professor of surgery. Since the beginning of his more than 40-year career, he has specialized in transplantation and transplant surgery. His background includes a long list of transplantation leadership roles for a variety of medical and educational institutions.
Before becoming co-director of the University of Chicago Medicine Department of Transplantation, Fung served as chief of transplant surgery at the university. He has also held the role of chairman of the department of surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. His academic appointments span back to 1988, holding many roles as professor or chairman for several universities and schools of medicine. Alongside his academic accomplishments, Dr. Fung has served as a director for the Cleveland Clinic Health System Center for Transplantation. Before that, he served as the medical director for Allogen Laboratory in Cleveland and as a scientific director at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Fung earned his bachelor’s degree in biology at Johns Hopkins University. Later, he earned his doctorate in Immunology from the University of Chicago and his M.D. from the University of Chicago School of Medicine. For several years, he interned and completed his general surgery residency at Strong Memorial Hospital through the University of Rochester. Before returning to Strong Memorial Hospital as a senior resident and chief resident of general surgery, he held roles as a clinical research fellow and research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh in their Transplantation Division and Tissue Typing Laboratory. Dr. Fung has published a long list of transplantation and medical research and literature.
