RENO, Nev. – On Friday, Ormat Technologies Inc. commemorated the opening of its newest geothermal facility at North Valley with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Governor Joe Lombardo joined Ormat and Nevada Energy leadership as well as local dignitaries to celebrate the completion of the North Valley Geothermal Development Project and tour the state-of-the-art facility that will produce emission-free geothermal energy for Nevada from its public lands.“This project is a testament to the power of renewable energy and its ability to provide sustainable and reliable electricity for communities while also reducing emissions,” said Paul Thomsen, Vice President of Ormat. “We are proud to bring this project online and to provide a significant economic benefit to the region.”
Part of the 24,000-acre San Emidio Geothermal Unit, the North Valley Geothermal Development Project is projected to provide 25 MW of domestic electricity for approximately 22,000 homes while offsetting 3.5 million tons of CO2 over the life of the project. The project will also contribute approximately $2 million in taxes and royalties every year, directly employ 400 construction workers and 20 full-time plant operators and provide the highest level of efficiency and safety in the industry.
This project supports Nevada’s Executive Order 2023-007, which focuses on developing geothermal projects to advance Nevada’s energy independence while spurring economic development, job creation and lowering costs for Nevadans.
The North Valley gen-tie line and interconnection to the grid was a unique challenge that was successfully completed with an extended team of project supporters. The project includes 58 miles of transmission line through mountainous terrain, which required creative engineering, lands, permitting and construction. Ultimately, the working relationship between NV Energy and Ormat Technologies Inc. facilitated the completion of the project on schedule and ensured cultural and biological exclusion windows were being observed.
