It’s no secret that Las Vegas’ recent influx of professional sports teams making their way to the Silver State is affecting many different industries, and youth sports is definitely one of them. c and more have all helped bring a new economic vitality to our market. Businesses and organizations have felt the shift that comes with having professional sports become a part of the local economy. From the hospitality sector having new opportunities to house guests that are in town for specific sporting events like the Stanley Cup Final, Formula 1® races or the WNBA Finals, to local businesses seeking opportunities to partner and engage with fan bases, there is one thing that has been proven: professional sports are great for Las Vegas.
Some of the positive effects we have seen specifically within the youth sports industry have been the increased interest in an array of recreational youth sporting options and more opportunities for youth athletes to engage with the professional athletes they revere on their favorite team. The sports industry has brought the inclusivity of fast-growing local fan bases driving team pride and a renewed sense of community within our city. Not to mention the spotlight on local professional sports teams brings awareness and invites initiatives such as sports clinics, mentor programs, scholarship opportunities, grant funding and an increase in sponsorship dollars going straight back to youth sports. Those dollars can help offset the rising cost of participation or equipment. This ultimately helps youth sports become more accessible and affordable.
The youth sports community has also gotten to experience firsthand how professional sports and events, like the NHL All-Star Weekend, NFL Draft and the Super Bowl, utilize local stadiums and amenities of the city; those events bring additional activations that cater towards fan and youth engagement, which has done a lot to get more kids interested in sports. Additionally, Las Vegas’ local professional teams have brought on an influx of community engagement, giving back to charities and nonprofit organizations as well as our schools. Professional players have participated in school events, hospital visits, attended openings of community facilities, provided autograph signings and much more. This kind of in-person engagement enriches the city and offers so much for our local youth athletes. These team initatives provide opportunities for youth players to meet the professionals they admire, inspiring them to work towards aspirations of becoming a professional athlete one day too. The proximity to successful athletes encourages youth athletes to dream big and work hard—life lessons that they can take with them as they grow up and start giving back to the community as well.
Partnership and sponsorship opportunities, community engagement and the growing pride in our city that these teams have inspired are just a few examples of how Las Vegas’ professional sports teams positively impact residents. In turn, the local community has received these teams with open arms and developed strong and passionate ties to them in a short amount of time since their arrivals to southern Nevada. With the undeniable probability for even more professional sports teams moving to the city we call home, it’s not hard to imagine the enourmous growth both physically and economically as they bring in new sporting venues, events and offerings. Las Vegas is no stranger to being a worldwide entertainment destination, but as professional sports teams continue to grow and thrive here, the city and its residents are becoming accustomed to bringing in fans to be apart of the experience, inspiring participation in youth sports, creating more local sports fans, and having professional sports become a major driver of our economy as the city experiences the benefits of becoming a newly minted “sports town.”
