His 1992 self-titled debut album peaked at No. 58 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and featured the hit single “One Last Cry,” which climbed to No. 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Following the critical and popular acclaim of this seminal album, the upstate New York native released “I Remember You” (1995) and “Anytime” (1997), which went double platinum and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
In 1998, McKnight signed with Motown Records, releasing his most successful album to date “Back at One” the following year. The record showcased his ability to transcend genres with a mix of hip hop-influenced contemporary R&B songs and ballads. After reaching No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, “Back at One” garnered nominations for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album and the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album. Since then, McKnight released an additional 10 albums and has collaborated with superstar artists including Quincy Jones, Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Diddy, Christina Aguilera, Rascal Flatts, Nelly, Vanessa Williams, Willie Nelson and Kenny G.
Throughout his career, McKnight has collected an impressive array of nominations, including 16 Grammy Award nominations as well as nominations and wins from the American Music Awards, Soul Train Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Blockbuster Awards and the prestigious Billboard Songwriter of The Year. In addition to his famed belting range and soulful lyrics, McKnight is skilled on piano, guitar, bass, drums, trombone, tuba, french horn and trumpet.
