Reno, Nev. – SilverSummit Healthplan presented Reno Rescue with a $20,000 Community Investment Award on Friday, September 12, to expand the nonprofit’s Stable Moments® program, the only one of its kind in Nevada. The program pairs foster and adoptive youth with trained adult mentors and rescued horses for weekly, trauma-informed sessions that build resilience, life skills, and personal growth.
During a check presentation and remarks at Reno Rescue’s ranch, guests also toured the facility and observed a live mentor training session with the horses. Funding from SilverSummit will help train 20 additional mentors, expand program capacity, and provide full participation for 40 local youth.
Stable Moments® addresses the high rates of trauma and behavioral health challenges facing foster and adopted youth in Washoe County by creating a unique, non-clinical environment where children strengthen emotional skills and find healing through equine-assisted mentorship.

About Reno Rescue
At Reno Rescue, we believe in compassion, connection, and community. Since our founding in 2010 by Cara Kaufer, our mission has been to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong care for horses in need while using these horses to create meaningful community outreach. This unique combination sets us apart from any other program in Nevada. Our rescued horses play a vital role in a variety of programs, including equine therapy, traditional horseback riding lessons, and community mentorship groups. These programs serve children in foster and adoptive care, veterans, individuals in recovery, disabled athletes, and others seeking growth and healing. By bringing people and rescued horses together, we inspire hope, build confidence, and create lasting positive change.
