Students from across Washoe County are leaving their mark on the community, thanks to a powerful new mural unveiled at Pickett Park. The mural is the result of a unique collaboration between Communities In Schools (CIS) of Western Nevada and the Nevada Museum of Art, offering local youth a creative platform to express their stories.
The mural was created as part of the CoLab Public Art Project through the E.L. Cord Museum School. Students from CIS-supported schools — including Vaughn Middle School, Sparks Middle School, Clayton Middle School, Sparks High School, and Innovations High School — worked side-by-side with professional artists to design and paint the piece.
Celebrating themes of creativity, connection and student success, the project gave participants a chance to explore public art while developing a lasting sense of pride and community. For many of the students, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see their voices reflected in a public space — and to contribute something meaningful to their city.
