Just as national headlines focus on health care insurance costs rising nationwide, Teachers Health Trust (THT), the 42 year old self-funded, nonprofit health insurance plan for educators in Clark County, Nevada, has announced that it is holding rates flat or significantly reducing premiums for some families premiums in 2026.
Starting in January 2026, THT will update its plan’s tiers to 5 groups:
- Employee only
- Employee + Spouse
- Employee + Child
- Employee + Children
- Employee + Family (any combination of a spouse and child/ren)
These new tiers will ensure members either see no change to the price of their premium or in some cases, like educators who qualify for the new Employee + Family tier, members could realize up to $2,200 in savings per year or 20% annually.
In addition, THT families can save between $2,016 to $2,892 per year by switching from the THT Signature Plan to the newly enhanced Advantage Plan, which has a higher deductible and out of pocket maximum but covers all preventive and many other services without needing to meet the deductible.
These cost savings were achieved due to THT’s continued scrutiny of all administrative costs. In fact, THT allocates only 5.9% of revenue to administrative costs, significantly lower than the fully insured industry standard of 15% and resulting in approximately $20 million in additional health care benefits for teachers.
THT has also realized cost savings with groundbreaking programs like its Health Investment Program that directly contracts with a trusted network of local providers who provide priority access to appointments and whose services are covered 100% by THT.
“Nationwide, health care remains a hot button topic as too many families are facing rising costs that they can’t afford,” said Tom Zumtobel, CEO of the Teachers Health Trust. “At THT, we remain committed to enacting innovative solutions, like our Health Investment Program, and managing health care costs so educators in Clark County and their families can count on improved access and reduced costs for the health care services they need.”
