Teachers Health Trust (THT), the 42-year-old, self-funded, nonprofit health insurance plan for educators in Clark County, Nevada, won the Gold Award in the services category for health insurance in the inaugural Fox 5 Viewer’s Choice Awards.
Winners were nominated and selected via online voting by the people of Southern Nevada. Nearly 1,000 businesses were nominated in a variety of categories. Online voting began June 23 and concluded July 13.
“It’s an honor to be chosen by our community,” said Tom Zumtobel, CEO of Teachers Health Trust. “Beyond offering affordable coverage, our goal is to foster better health by investing in member wellness and partnering with providers who make prevention and engagement a priority.”
Zumtobel added that THT allocates less than 6% of revenue to administrative costs, significantly lower than the fully insured industry standard of 15% and resulting in approximately $20 million in additional health care benefits for educators in Clark County.
About 96% of eligible CCSD licensed employees are enrolled in a THT plan, equating to roughly 18,000 teachers. In addition, 16,000 dependents are enrolled.
THT has nearly 9,000 doctors across multiple specialties and uses the Sierra Healthcare Options (SHO) network, which is the same network used by Nevada’s largest employers like MGM Resorts, Station Casinos, Caesars Palace, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and the State of Nevada.
Within the last year, THT launched its innovative Health Investment Program that contracts directly with a select group of health care providers and incentivizes them to provide prioritized care for THT members. Their services are covered 100% by THT so they are at no cost to members.
In addition, in 2024, THT successfully overcame the significant financial hardships it faced after the Great Recession and COVID economic crises, closing the year with $33.5 million on hand, achieving financial solvency as net assets exceed net liabilities.
