Retired Police Officer David Kohlmeier, also known from his popular podcast The Problem Solver, is asking Clark County residents to take a preventative action from being a burglary victim at your home.
Kohlmeier says that by installing 3 inch screws in your strike plates is the key to prevent burglaries. Most strike plates come with factory screws that are 1 inch and less. The strike plate is attached to the door frame with screws. The metal bolt of the deadbolt lock slides into the strike plate to secure the door soundly to the door frame.
A high security strike plate is required to keep the metal bolt from being kicked from the door frame when locked. A high security strike plate should have at least four (4) screws that are a minimum of three (3″) inches long. From his experience as both a police officer in NYC and in Henderson, he believes that if everyone just followed this simple crime prevention tip they could prevent burglaries. No criminal wants to make a lot of noise when breaking into a home. By making your home more of a fortress can prevent you from being a victim.
