LAS VEGAS, NEV. (May 16, 2025) — May is observed as Mental Health Awareness Month, and Touro University Nevada, the state’s largest medical school and only school of osteopathic medicine, is raising awareness on Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. Mental health conditions are often considered “invisible illnesses” because they aren’t always easily recognized by others. Data from the CDC finds that in 2023, an estimated 15.5 million adults had a current ADHD diagnosis yet an estimated 7 million children ages 3 – 17 have ADHD but have never received a formal diagnosis. While depression, anxiety and PTSD are among the most commonly recognized mental health conditions, ADHD is often left undiagnosed until adulthood. When left unaddressed in early childhood, it can have lasting effects throughout a person’s life, including dramatic impacts on an individual’s ability to work, perform well in school and have healthy relationships.
Occupational Therapists (OTs) not only aid physical disabilities, but they also often work with individuals who are experiencing mental health disorders. Touro University Nevada’s assistant professor, Dr. Brynn Butzman specializes in ADHD rehab services and explains that it’s a condition of cognitive and behavioral difficulties rather than a hyper or inattentive individual. OTs can help with the challenges of emotional self-regulation that can help improve organization, time management, concentration and productivity.
