Dr. Edith Fernandez, Vice President of Culture, Planning & Policy at Nevada State College (Nevada State), has been recognized by the Sandy Peltyn Foundation as a “Señora of Excellence” for her work in supporting the academic advancement of Latino youth. Dr. Edith Fernandez was honored during the 2023 Awards Gala on Saturday, June 17 at the Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
“It is an incredible honor to be recognized for the Señoras of Excellence award by the Sandy Pelton Foundation,” said Dr. Edith Fernandez. “I’ve spent the last 25 years dedicating my career to higher education and serving students in the Latinx community to help break down barriers and provide resources so they can succeed and pursue bright futures. The many people who have won this award before me have inspired me to continue my dedication to this work. I hope, through this award, I can inspire other Latinx youth to follow in my footsteps and uplift the next generation.”
Dr. Edith Fernandez has been a leader in higher education for over 25 years, having helped countless students with financial aid, advising, career services, academic success, and more. In her current role at Nevada State she oversees the Institutional Effectiveness, Policy, Planning, and Diversity. She is also a board member of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education that supports Latinx graduate students complete their doctorate and faculty achieve tenure.
Proceeds from the 2023 Awards Gala went towards the Latin Chamber of Commerce’s Scholarship Fund, which seeks to assist first-generation college students pursuing a STEM, business, or finance degree.
