This holiday season, many Reno locals will attempt to be more environmentally conscious as sustainability becomes more popular, however, most don’t know how to recycle correctly. Last year, Waste Management recycled 15.2 million tons, and are on track to increase that amount and recycle up to 17.3 million tons in 2038. In order to accomplish this, they will need help from the community.
We can start with smart recycling this holiday season. Below are common holiday items that can and can’t be recycled, and some holiday recycling tips!
These holiday items go in the recycling cart:
– Wrapping paper (non-metallic)
– Tissue paper
– Christmas cards + envelopes
– Cardboard packaging and gift boxes
– Holiday newspaper ads, magazines and catalogs
– Plastic bottles and jugs, glass bottles and jars, and aluminum and steel cans.
– Cookie and popcorn tins
– Aluminum pie plates
DO NOT put these items in a standard recycling cart:
– Christmas lights and batteries (these should be recycled at a
– Household Hazardous Waste center)
– Plastic tree ornaments
– Plastic gift bags
– Tinsel
Holiday recycling tips:
– Reuse holiday items when possible, including bows, ribbon, gift bags and decorations. This will also save you money in the following year instead of buying brand new items!
– Christmas trees, wreaths, holly and other natural decor items can be composted. For Incline, Carson and Storey County, Waste Management will pick up your tree for compost. In Washoe County, residents can compost trees with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful.
– Break down all boxes to better fit them in your recycling cart.
– Unwanted decorations in good condition can also be donated to charity shops.
