These programs certainly were there for me when I needed them. I’m a cancer survivor. The medications, healthcare, and interventions that saved my life would not have been accessible if I had had to pay out of pocket. This is especially relatable these days as costs are increasing in virtually every other aspect of American life—from food and housing to energy—and wages have not kept pace with these price increases for many years.
That is why I have always put my full support and energy behind programs like Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage is a holistic, affordable care plan for seniors and those living with disabilities, many of whom may already be dealing with financial insecurity. With Medicare Advantage, members have expansive access to a variety of services, from routine doctor visits and specialist care to preventive services that help members detect problems early on, while they are still easily treatable. This reduces the need for ER visits or premature nursing home stays. Medicare Advantage’s supplemental benefits include vision and dental care, as well as transportation for those who no longer drive, and regular, sustained interventions for people dealing with chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Sustained care is critical to successful chronic disease management.
Unfortunately, the program’s quality benefits are routinely in danger of disappearing, thanks to repeated reductions in its funding. These reductions may seem small, but members understand that even the smallest cuts to Medicare Advantage funding could mean less choice in doctors and specialists for them. It could mean less comprehensive care and, distressingly for those depending on medications to maintain their quality of life, increased co-pays at the drug store. In short, Medicare Advantage cuts—no matter how small—would likely result in decreased quality of care and increased premiums and co-payments that its members cannot afford.
As a Nevada Assemblyman, I will always use my influence and vote to protect affordable, quality access to healthcare programs such as Medicare Advantage for seniors. There is no room for equivocation when lives and health are at stake. Lawmakers at every level, including Rep. Horsford, need to protect Medicare Advantage. And those up for reelection in 2026 should especially keep it in mind if they want to keep their positions in Washington.
