BURLINGAME, CA, May 1 – Eric Brand announced an innovative collaboration to create limited-edition furnishings in rare materials, using proceeds to fund the 3rd edition of their MASTERS & MENTORS program for young design students.
Brand named his partner in the mentorship program Daniel Joseph Chenin, principal of Daniel Joseph Chenin, Ltd. Chenin and Brand will select a design student to work across the entire design and manufacturing process, spending time in Brand’s studio in the Bay Area and Chenin’s office in Las Vegas. Previous mentors include Roger Thomas, principal of The Roger Thomas Collection Inc., and Joni Vanderslice, president of J. Banks Design Group, with past academic partners consisting of The California College of the Arts and the Savannah College of Art and Design, Inc. Brand will announce the academic partner for the 3rd edition at a later date.
“The program offers an integral view of what designers and craftsmen can accomplish in close partnership,” Brand says. “That kind of collaboration has benefited my career greatly, and I’m privileged to share this approach with the rising generation of talent.”
The California luxury residential and hospitality furniture designer, marking his 27th anniversary in 2023, is known for offering furnishings crafted from unusual, rare materials. For this program, a new collection of furnishings will fund a unique mentorship for a promising design student.
Chenin is a licensed architect in several states and a recipient of multiple awards. Having spent more than a decade teaching architecture and interior design at his alma mater, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he is invigorated by the prospect of returning to the classroom.
“Words cannot sufficiently express my honor and excitement to be selected to participate in Eric Brand’s Masters & Mentors Program,” Chenin says. ” Over the past decade, I have come to know the man behind the brand as a passionate and visionary designer with a meticulous eye for detailing and discerning standards for quality and craftsmanship. He shares my enthusiasm for design across all mediums and forms and my unwavering commitment to delivering each vision with exacting precision.”
“The Masters & Mentors Program that Eric has created is far more than just a return to the academic studio environment,” Chenin says. “It is an opportunity to move beyond the theoretical into the physical. To exercise creativity within the context of real-world challenges. From the trials and tribulations of navigating material properties to exploring joinery and fabrication techniques, I look forward to the collaborative journey and the products brought to fruition through this process.”
Brand and Chenin will review the candidacies of promising young designers and expect to announce the winning mentee in the Spring of 2024.
