Las Vegas, NV – The Nevada Council on Problem Gambling is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a 2023 Agility Grant. The Agility Grant program is a strategic initiative by the National Council on Problem Gambling, funded by the NFL via the NFL Foundation with additional support from FanDuel, to provide funding to nonprofit organizations for problem gambling prevention programs. The $33,000 grant will be supplemented by $10,000 from a contribution by Draft Kings to deploy a Student-Athlete Gambling Awareness (SAGA) program in several Las Vegas area high schools with prevalent high-risk populations during the 2023-2024 academic year. The National Council on Problem Gambling is neutral on legalized gambling. Based in Washington DC, NCPG is the only national nonprofit organization that seeks to minimize the economic and social costs associated with gambling addiction.
The SAGA program, originally developed by the Nevada Council and made possible by a generous contribution from the Vegas Golden Knights Foundation, provides a framework for primary and secondary prevention of problem gambling for student-athletes, who are at high-risk for early engagement in gambling activities and subsequent development of gambling problems. SAGA will provide baseline knowledge for athletics staff and students about problem gambling, how it may manifest, specific impacts student-athletes may face if they engage in gambling activities, and resources to get help for a gambling problem in the state of Nevada. SAGA will also develop and train student mentors to assist with program delivery and sustainability for the future.
