Nevada Mental Health is offering TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) to teens ages 15 and older. The move comes after the FDA recently approved TMS for teens battling major depressive disorder (MDD). Per FDA’s guidance, Nevada Mental Health will now use TMS as a complementary therapy for MDD patients.
“This is a breakthrough for the teen patients we serve,” said Dr. Sid Khurana, MD, co-founder of Nevada Mental Health. “We want parents to know this option is available, especially if their child has been struggling and not seeing the results they’d hoped for with other treatments.”
MDD is a severe form of depression affecting 21 million people in the U.S. TMS uses magnetic coils to stimulate areas of the brain negatively affected by mental health disorders such as depression. Treatment sessions last about 20 minutes. TMS does not cause systemic side effects and has produced improvements for patients not responding to other treatments. TMS is currently FDA-approved for depression, OCD, smoking cessation, as well as anxiety.
