VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. – St. Mary’s Art Center, a non-profit organization located in the former 1876 St. Mary Louise Hospital in historic Virginia City, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the cult classic film, “Godmonster of Indian Flats,” with a commemorative event from October 13-15. The event will offer a weekend of film screenings, art exhibitions, “American Relic” slideshow, live music, and a Fall Art Reception, paying homage to the unique piece of cinematic history.
“Godmonster of Indian Flats,” a 1973 cult classic film written and directed by Frederic Hobbs, was shot on location in the Comstock and includes a memorable scene filmed on the lawn of St. Mary’s Art Center. The film has earned a dedicated following over the years thanks to its peculiar charm.
“This film holds a special place in our local cinematic history,” A. Perry, executive director of St. Mary’s Art Center, said. “It’s fun to share the artwork of Frederic Hobbs and the quirky nature of this fan favorite that was proclaimed to be ‘so bad, it’s good’ by the American Genre Film Archive.”
The event will feature movie screenings throughout the weekend. Movie tickets are $10 for each screening and include access to the fine art galleries throughout the four-story building. The Godmonster Fall Art Reception, including live music by CAGE, a slideshow of “American Relic,” and refreshments, is October 14, from 1-4 p.m. and is free to the public.
Additionally, four distinctive art exhibitions featuring rarely shown work from Frederic Hobbs, the writer and director of Godmonster, as well as work by Honey Coughlin, Scott MacLeod, and select local and regional artists of the Godmonster Exquisite Corpse Exhibition inspired by the film.
“The Godmonster Exquisite Corpse Exhibition is a really unique exhibition made up of a collaboration between paired artists, each creating half of a canvas art piece without knowing who their partner is or what they are creating. The results are fascinating in their contrasts or oddly complementary works. There couldn’t be a better way to compliment and celebrate the Godmonster and Frederic Hobbs,” Perry said.
